Screenings
-
Early identification can help students receive support before challenges begin to impact academic success. Screenings provide a brief snapshot of a student's speech, language, literacy, and communication skills to help identify potential areas of concern and determine whether further evaluation or support may be beneficial.
Please note this is not an evaluation and does not determine diagnoses/disorders. It helps identify students who may benefit from literacy enrichment and creates individualized goals and lesson plans for students.
-
Phonological awareness
Letter-sound knowledge
Early decoding
Vocabulary at grade-level
Fluency
Comprehension
Narrative Skills + Story Grammar

📚 Grades: Pre-K through 6th Grade (customizable)
⏱ Duration: Approximately 15 minutes per student
🏫 Location: Conducted on-site at the school
👥 Format: Individual student screenings
💲 School-funded service
📅 Scheduling: Half-day, full-day, or multi-day screening events available depending on student numbers
-
To ensure screenings are conducted efficiently and with minimal classroom disruption, schools are asked to provide:
A small, quiet space within the school building
A schedule or roster of participating students
Parent consent forms (if required by school policy)
Students are briefly pulled from class, screened individually, and returned to instruction following completion.
-
Following the screening:
✅ Parents receive a summary of findings and recommendations.
✅ Teachers receive relevant educational recommendations and observations.
✅ Schools receive an overview of participation and identified areas of need.
Please note that screenings are not formal evaluations and do not result in a diagnosis. Screening results help determine whether additional support may be recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
No. This program is not speech therapy, not diagnostic, and not billed.
It is supplementary literacy‑language enrichment designed to support early reading, writing, and comprehension skills powered by an SLP.
-
Speech-language pathologists are uniquely trained in both language and literacy development. Reading and writing are built upon foundational language skills such as vocabulary, comprehension, narrative development, phonological awareness, and oral language.
SLPs are essential members of school teams because they support the language skills that underlie reading, writing, learning, and communication. While teachers provide high-quality instruction to all students, some learners need additional support that extends beyond the classroom setting. An SLP's specialized training allows them to identify and strengthen the foundational language skills that contribute to literacy success, helping students grow into confident communicators and readers.
-
Sprout & Speak was created in response to a growing need for literacy support and a passion for helping students thrive. Through my work in schools, I've seen how reading and literacy challenges can affect more than a student's ability to read. When students struggle to access grade-level material, it impacts their classroom participation, academic performance, confidence, and overall learning experience. As literacy outcomes continue to be an area of concern for many schools, there is an increasing need for support that strengthens the foundational skills students need to succeed.
When children become more confident readers, they become more confident learners, communicators, and participants in the classroom. These services were created to provide engaging, language-rich experiences that bridge the connection between language and literacy, helping students build stronger foundations, foster a love of learning, and unlock their full potential both academically and beyond.
-
Students who:
Experience difficulty with early literacy tasks (struggle to hear rhyming words, difficulty blending sounds, trouble segmenting words, confuse sounds/letters, struggle to recall letter names, difficulty connecting speech to print).
Difficulty with narrative skills and story grammar (retelling stories, sequencing, answering comprehension questions from a short passage or story).
Experience difficulty with vocabulary, grammar, and syntax (write incomplete/run-on sentences, use incorrect verb tense, difficulty combining ideas into clear sentences, need support organizing thoughts, use vague vocabulary, struggle to define words and generate on-level vocabulary words).
Benefit from confidence‑building in literacy practice & motivation and require small group or individualized instruction to keep up with classmates.
Are consistently below average in testing & report cards (writing is limited, unclear, and unorganized. Slow reading rate, reduced stamina, or difficulty comprehending grade‑level passages).
-
There are no IEPs, no evaluations, no Medicaid billing, no special education documentation. This program is designed to be easy, flexible, and low-lift for schools.
